Science Calculators

Free science and engineering calculators with NIST-grade exact conversion factors. Built for engineers, physicists, mechanics, and students who need bit-exact unit conversions for spec sheets, lab work, and applied calculations.

Every factor is traceable to a primary source (NIST SP 811, BIPM SI Brochure, IYP 1959, CGPM 1901) and every pair of compatible units is tagged exact in the converter.

Force and Torque

Convert between SI, gravitational, and CGS units of force (newton, kilonewton, dyne, kilogram-force, tonne-force, pound-force, ounce-force, short-ton-force) and torque (newton-metre, kilonewton-metre, kilogram-force metre, pound-foot, pound-inch, ounce-inch, kilogram-force centimetre).

All factors anchor to the 1901 CGPM standard gravity (g_n = 9.80665 m/s² exact) and the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exact). Engineering precision is selectable from 0 to 15 decimals — bit-level for metrology, single-decimal for daily mechanic work.

What's Next

This category is expanding to cover pressure, energy, power, and temperature converters in upcoming releases. Each future tool will follow the same exactness contract: NIST-traceable factors, audience-laddered precision, and explicit naming-convention disambiguation (lb·ft vs ft·lb, US gal vs UK gal, °C vs K vs °F).

Frequently Asked Questions

An exact factor is one defined by an authoritative agreement rather than measured experimentally. NIST SP 811 Appendix B.8 prints exact factors in boldface; we mirror that convention with an (exact) badge on every pair where both endpoints are defined by exact rationals. Examples: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, g_n = 9.80665 m/s² are all exact.

Daily mechanic work: 1–2 decimals. Real-estate or general engineering: 4 decimals. Cadastral, aerospace, or fastener-tightening specs: 6–10 decimals. Metrology, lab calibration, or full-precision IEEE-754 traceability: 15 decimals. The precision selector applies only to display rounding — the underlying calculation is always full double precision.
