A running age grade calculator turns one road-race result into a percentage of the WMA standard for a runner of your age and sex. It covers every published road column from the mile to 200 km at every single year of age, and can credit back what a hot or high race cost you.
What Is Age Grading in Running?
Age grading expresses a race result as a percentage of the published standard time for a runner of your age and sex over that distance. A 44-year-old man who runs a 10 km road race in 40:00 grades at 70.69%, because the standard for a 44-year-old man over 10 km is 28:17. That standard is not estimated here: it comes from the WMA/USATF road tables maintained by Alan Jones and approved on 10 January 2025 by the USATF Masters Long Distance Running Council.
An age grade is not a percentile. A 70% score does not mean you finished ahead of 70% of the runners your age; it means your time is 70% of the standard for your age and sex, and that standard sits near what the best runner in the world of that age and sex can do. The misreading is common enough on Masters forums that the calculator carries a permanent line about it under the gauge.
USATF Masters attaches names to the bands: 60% and above is local class, 70% regional, 80% national, 90% world class, and 100% is approximately world-record level for your age and sex. USATF names nothing below 60%, so the sixth band on the class table is this site's label rather than theirs. The road edition of the tables covers 22 distances from 1 mile to 200 km at every single year of age from 5 to 99 — 4,180 published factors across the two tables — which is why a road mile and a 50 km each have their own column instead of being derived from the marathon. Track events sit on a separate table with its own revision history, so a 1500 m or a 3000 m does not belong in a road calculator and is not offered here.
How to Use the Age Grade Calculator
The form opens with a finished result already on screen: a 44-year-old man, 10 km, 40:00.
1. Pick your distance. Sixteen road columns run from 1 mile to the marathon, and six ultra columns carry on from 50 km to 200 km. Choose Another distance for an odd length, such as a 6-mile club race, and type it in: anything within 0.5% of a published column snaps to that column, and anything between two columns is interpolated.
2. Choose men's or women's standards, then enter your age on race day. That is the WMA rule, and it matters around a birthday, because the tables publish a factor for every single year rather than for five-year bands.
3. Set the units selector to kilometers, °C and meters, or to miles, °F and feet. It re-expresses what you already typed instead of relabeling it, so switching units does not change the race you entered.
4. Open the conditions panel only if the race was hot, humid or high. It is closed by default, and its own defaults — 50 °F air, 41 °F dew point, sea level — sit in the no-adjustment band, so a closed panel and an untouched open one return the same answer.
Switching the segmented control to Target a % replaces the time fields with a target-percentage box and a slider. The big card at the top relabels itself Time you need and prints the time, and the tables below switch from what your time grades to what each row would demand.
The Age-Grading Formula, Step by Step

Two divisions do the work. The first converts the open-class standard into a standard for your age:

Run the default state through both. The 10 km factor for a 44-year-old man is 0.9336, which puts the age standard at 28:17, and 28:17 against a 40:00 finish gives 70.69%. The calculator divides by the unrounded age standard rather than by the 28:17 it prints, so redoing the arithmetic by hand on the displayed value can land a hundredth of a point away.
The same factor produces the open-class equivalent. Multiply the standard-conditions time by the age factor and you get what the run is worth as an open-class performance: 40:00 × 0.9336 = 37:21.

Here h is the heat penalty and a the altitude penalty, each expressed as a percentage. Target mode runs the chain backwards: it divides the age standard by your target percentage to get the time you would need in standard conditions, then multiplies by the conditions factor to get the time you need on the day.

Worked Age-Grade Examples
A 40:00 10 km at 44, cool air and sea level
The factor is 0.9336, which sets the age standard at 28:17, and the run grades at 70.69% — regional class. The open-class equivalent is 37:21: an open-class athlete would have to run 37:21 for a performance of the same quality. The line under the gauge is the part you can train against — 4:39 faster, at 35:21, and the same runner reaches national class.
The same run in the heat: 79 °F air, 68 °F dew point
The standards assume cool air. On a hot day the same effort produces a slower time, so the raw grade understates the run. Air temperature and dew point sum to 147 °F, which falls in the 141-150 band. The source publishes 3.0% to 4.5% for that band; the calculator applies the 3.75% midpoint and prints the published range beside it. Crediting 3.75% back turns 40:00 into a standard-conditions 38:33, the grade moves from 70.69% to 73.35%, and the open-class equivalent tightens from 37:21 to 36:00.
The same run at 1,650 m of altitude
Move that 40:00 to a race 1,650 m above sea level and the altitude model credits 4.69%, more than the hot day was worth. The standard-conditions time becomes 38:12, the grade reads 74.01%, and the open-class equivalent drops to 35:40. The model comes from Péronnet, Thibault and Cousineau's 1991 analysis and assumes you arrived unacclimatized — if you live at that elevation, the credit overstates what the day cost you.
Six miles in 36 minutes at 44, in hot sun
This is close to the question that prompted the calculator, posted on a Masters training board. Six miles is 9.656 km, which has no published column, so the factor is interpolated to 0.9329 and the age standard lands at 27:18. Scored raw, 36:00 grades at about 75.8%. Add 81 °F air with a 64 °F dew point — a 145 °F sum, the same 141-150 band — and the standard-conditions time becomes 34:42, the grade 78.66%, and the open-class equivalent 32:22. Regional class either way, with the heat worth close to three points.
Target mode: what 80% demands
Keep the 44-year-old man and the 10 km, switch to target mode, and set 80%. The top card, now labeled Time you need, returns 35:21. A second number on the same screen is easy to confuse with it: 33:00 also appears, and that is the open-class equivalent of an 80% run rather than a time anyone has to run. A 55-year-old woman aiming at 75% over 5 km gets 22:52, from a factor of 0.8107 and an age standard of 17:09.
Mistakes That Change the Number
Entering your age today instead of your age on race day — WMA scores the athlete who ran the race. Factors are published for every single year, so a birthday between the race and the calculation moves the result.
Comparing a 2025 figure with an older one — some calculators still run the 2020, 2015 or 2010 factors, and Howard Grubb's reference page lets you choose between all four editions. A percentage is only comparable with another percentage from the same edition.
Treating the conditions-adjusted percentage as an official result — race results, rankings and grand prix standings all use raw time. The standard-conditions figure is a private read on what the weather cost you, useful for judging your own fitness rather than for arguing about a placing.
Reading the open-class equivalent as your target — in target mode the number to chase is the one under Time you need. The open-class equivalent describes what the run is worth in the open class, and for anyone past peak age it is the faster of the two times.
What Age Grading Does Not Measure
Age grading says nothing about the course. Hills, corners, surface and wind are absent from the standard, so 70% on a rolling out-and-back and 70% on a flat certified loop are not the same run. Tracking your own scores across years on one course is sound; comparing across courses is rough.
The heat credit reads a band off a published table. The source publishes a range for each temperature-plus-dew-point sum on purpose, because body size, training state and heat acclimatization all move the true cost. This calculator applies the midpoint of the band and prints the published range next to it in the worked chain, so the room in the estimate stays on screen. Above a 180 °F sum the credit stops at 10%, and the source's own advice at that point is that hard running is not recommended.
The altitude credit is a model. It is published for 0 to 4,000 m and for distances between the mile and the marathon, and it assumes an unacclimatized runner. The 1991 paper tabulates the effect by sex; the single curve applied here is read from the women's table and used for both, a deliberate simplification of ours; the authors propose no single curve. Its sanity check is Mexico City at 2,240 m, where the curve gives a 7.96% marathon cost against the 8.4% observed at the 1968 Olympics.
The ladder itself is a convention. USATF Masters names five bands and stops at 60%, so there is no official name for a 45% run, and the sixth band on the class table carries a footnote saying the label is ours.
Age Grading Questions Runners Ask
What is a good age grade percentage for running?
USATF Masters puts 60% and above at local class, 70% at regional class, 80% at national class and 90% at world class, with 100% approximately world-record level for your age and sex. The ladder does not move with age, so a 70% at 65 and a 70% at 25 are the same quality of run — which is the point of grading by age.
Is an age grade the same as a percentile?
No. An age grade is your time as a share of the published standard for your age and sex. A 70% score means your time is 70% of that standard; it says nothing about where you finished in the field.
What time do I need for an 80% age grade?
It depends on your age, sex and distance. A 44-year-old man needs 35:21 over 10 km, which is 4:39 faster than 40:00. Switch to target mode, type 80, and the Time you need card returns the time for your own age and distance.
Why is my parkrun age grade different from the one here?
parkrun scores against its own tables. They are based on the WMA versions rather than being one of them, and a results system is not obliged to use the WMA/USATF edition, so a parkrun percentage and a WMA/USATF 2025 road percentage will usually differ a little for the same 5 km. Neither is wrong; they are answers from different tables.
Can an age grade be over 100%?
Yes. Over 100% means you beat the published standard for your age and sex, which happens most often at older ages where the standard rests on a thin field. The same 40:00 10 km that grades 66.00% at 25 grades 119.83% at 85.
Does this work for track races, a 1500 m or a 3000 m?
No. This calculator carries the road edition of the tables only. The 1500 m and 3000 m are track events with a separate table and a different revision history. The shortest column here is 1 mile and the longest is 200 km.
How much does heat change an age grade?
Between nothing and about ten percent, depending on the air temperature and the dew point. A 40:00 10 km by a 44-year-old man grades 70.69% in cool air; in 79 °F with a 68 °F dew point the same run is credited 3.75% and grades 73.35%. The raw figure is what you ran, and the adjusted one estimates what that effort was worth in cool air at sea level.
Does altitude count, and how high does it have to be?
The model runs from sea level to 4,000 m, and the credit grows with both elevation and race distance. At 1,650 m the same 40:00 10 km is credited 4.69%, moving it from 70.69% to 74.01%. Lower down the effect is modest: a half marathon at 500 m earns 1.53%.
How accurate is this age grade calculator?
The factors are not fitted or modeled here. All 4,180 of them are read straight from the published WMA/USATF 2025 road tables, and the output was checked against Howard Grubb's reference calculator across 12,540 combinations, agreeing to within 0.022 of a percentage point over the 30-150% range of real results. Interpolation only enters when you type a distance with no published column, and even then the result snaps to a column when it is within 0.5% of one.

What should I do with the number once I have it?
Set the next class as the target. The line under the gauge names the exact time to it: for a 44-year-old man at 10 km, national class is 4:39 away — a sharper goal than a round finish time. The other-ages table shows what today's fitness will grade at 49, 54 and 64. The equivalent-performances table shows the same quality of run at other distances; those times come from the age-standard tables, so read them as a benchmark of equal quality, not a race prediction.
