What a Discount Calculator Actually Reports
On a 59.99 tag at 20% off, this calculator reports 47.99 to pay and 12.00 saved — the two figures a discount page exists to produce. Pure arithmetic puts the saving at 11.998, and no till on earth can hand you eight tenths of a cent, so the number is rounded to the cent exactly as a register rounds it. Run that same sum through the pages ranking for it and you are handed all three answers — 11.998, 11.99 and 12.00 — with nothing said about which one the cashier will charge.
That gap between the arithmetic and the receipt is not an edge case, it is the normal case, because shop prices are built out of nines. How to Use the Discount Calculator

5% off 19.99: when a percentage is barely a discount
A loyalty app takes 5% off a 19.99 item. The cards read 18.99 and 1.00, because five percent of 19.99 is 0.9995 and the rounding turns it into a flat dollar. Three things fall out of that table.
