The total-unit side is a single subtraction. Convert the start and end datetimes to a timestamp — the number of seconds since January 1, 1970, the Unix epoch — subtract, and you have the total seconds S. Every other total comes from dividing S and rounding down:
Total weeks is total days divided by 7, and total months is years times 12 plus the leftover months. For the span January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026 that gives 364 total days, 52 weeks, and 8,736 hours.
The calendar breakdown (years, months, days) uses long subtraction instead: peel off the full years first, then the full months, then count the days left over, aligning to real month lengths of 28 to 31 days and to leap-year Februaries as it goes. That is why 9,695 days resolves to exactly 26 years, 6 months, and 17 days rather than a flat division by 365. Throughout, the calculator reports a pure calendar-day difference and never subtracts weekends or holidays.

Counting a Leap Day Correctly (February 29)

Because 2024 is a leap year, February 29 genuinely exists and is counted, not skipped. Hours, Not Just Days: Adding a Time of Day

Common Date Duration Mistakes
- Counting the start day, which produces an off-by-one error. From July 1 to July 18, 2026 the span is 17 days, not 18, because the total is measured as end minus start and does not include the start day itself. If you actually need the inclusive count — an event's length or a hotel stay in nights — add one to the total days.
- Confusing the calendar breakdown with the total days. "26 years, 6 months, and 17 days" and "9,695 days" describe the very same span in two units; they are not two different answers. Use the total days for a countdown and the year/month/day breakdown for an anniversary, and never plug one into the other.

- Adding months as a flat 30 days. Real months run 28 to 31 days, so a fixed 30-day shortcut is off by a day or two: February 1 to March 1 is 28 days (29 in a leap year), while July 1 to August 1 is 31. When exact days matter, trust the total-days figure over a month estimate.
- Expecting business days. This calculator counts calendar days, and every total includes Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. It has no working-day mode and does not skip weekends or holidays, so for a working-days figure you need a dedicated business-day calculator.
- Ignoring time zones and daylight saving when you enter times. The tool subtracts timestamps, so the same date-and-time pair can differ by an hour across a time-zone or DST change. If you only need whole-day totals, leave the time fields blank and enter dates alone to sidestep the issue.
- Expecting February 29 to appear every year. In a common year there is no February 29, so a leap-day date rolls to March 1 rather than a date that does not exist — worth remembering when a span begins or ends on a leap day.
