How Many Milliliters Is a Tablespoon?

A tablespoon is 15 ml in most of the world, 14.787 ml in the US customary system and 20 ml in Australia. Which of the three a recipe means depends entirely on who wrote it: Sydney assumes 20 ml, London and Auckland assume 15 ml, and the older American cookbooks were written against the 14.787 ml customary spoon — exactly half a US fluid ounce. Nothing printed on the page tells you which spoon was in the author's drawer, which is why the question has three correct answers and only one common wrong assumption: that everybody means the same thing.
The 20 ml Australian tablespoon is the outlier, and it did not arrive by accident. Australia's Metric Conversion Board promulgated it during the metrication of the 1970s, alongside a 5 ml teaspoon. Whatever the committee's reasoning was, the arithmetic it left behind is the part cooks have to live with: the Australian spoon is four teaspoons, while a US or metric tablespoon is three. The tool states this in its own equivalents box — 1 US tablespoon = 3 US teaspoons, 1 Australian tablespoon = 4 metric teaspoons — and it is the single fact that turns a small volume difference into a genuine recipe error.
The US number comes from a different place. A US fluid ounce is 29.574 ml, and the customary tablespoon is half of it, which is where 14.787 ml comes from — not a rounding of 15, but a fraction of an older unit. Then American labeling rounded it anyway. Under 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii), the regulation that governs Nutrition Facts panels, a teaspoon means 5 ml, a tablespoon means 15 ml, a fluid ounce means 30 ml and a cup means 240 ml. The rounding is internally consistent — 15 is still half of 30 — but it means a US shopper reading "1 tbsp" on a serving size is reading a metric spoon, not a customary one. That is why this converter opens on the 15 ml metric standard for visitors in the United States and the United Kingdom, and on the 20 ml spoon in Australia, with the select at the top free to override it.
A milliliter, for its part, is one thousandth of a liter and the same volume as one cubic centimeter, which is why syringes, measuring jugs and every recipe written outside the United States use it. Its advantage over the spoon is that it means one thing in every kitchen on earth. Its limitation is the same as the tablespoon's: it measures space, not mass. Fill one 15 ml spoon with table salt and it holds 18.26 g; fill the identical spoon with cocoa powder and it holds 6.34 g. The spoon has not changed and neither has the line in the recipe, so a tablespoon count cannot become grams until you say what is in the spoon. One last distinction worth making before you measure anything: the tablespoon in the cutlery drawer and the tablespoon in a measuring set are different objects that share a name. The measuring spoon is manufactured to a standard; the serving spoon is manufactured to look nice on a table. Using the Tablespoons to ml Converter

One tablespoon is already sitting in the field when the page loads, paired with whichever standard your locale is most likely to want. In the United States and the United Kingdom that pairing reads 1 tbsp = 15 ml, because both default to the metric spoon rather than the 14.787 ml customary one. 2. Type the amount. The result updates as you type and carries up to one decimal in the tablespoons-to-milliliters direction, dropping it when there is nothing to show: 3 tbsp reads 45 ml on the metric standard and 44.4 ml on the US one. The field accepts up to 10,000 tbsp, or just under 1,000,000 ml when you are converting the other way.
3. Read the two cards underneath. The first restates the amount in teaspoons using the ratio for the standard you picked — 3 per tablespoon for US and metric, 4 for Australian — which is the fastest way to find a workable substitute when you are missing a spoon size. One behavior to know about the second card: it always divides by the US cup of 236.588 ml, even when the standard is metric or Australian. That is intentional — the cup on a recipe is far more often the US one — but it means 16 metric tablespoons read as 1.014 cups rather than a round 1, and it is not describing the 250 ml metric cup.

Because 15 ml splits into three 5 ml teaspoons, any awkward metric remainder can be paid in teaspoons — 100 ml is 6 tablespoons with 10 ml left over, which is exactly 2 teaspoons. The Tablespoon to Milliliter Formula

Nothing about the arithmetic here is hard: one amount in, one factor, one amount out. Milliliters = tablespoons × F, and tablespoons = milliliters ÷ F on the way back. The whole difficulty of this conversion sits upstream of the multiplication, in working out which F the recipe meant — which is why the tool asks you for the standard before it asks you for an amount.
The three factors and where they come from:
1. Metric tablespoon, F = 15. Exact by definition, used across the UK, New Zealand, Canada, continental Europe and Asia, and the value the FDA writes into US nutrition labeling.
2. US customary tablespoon, F = 14.787. Half a US fluid ounce (29.574 ÷ 2). This is the spoon behind older American recipe development and behind the neat 16 tablespoons in a US cup.
3. Australian tablespoon, F = 20. Exact by definition, and four metric teaspoons rather than three.

Read down the last row and you can see both errors this page exists to prevent. The gap between the US and metric columns is 0.213 ml per tablespoon, which is 1.4% and invisible at one spoonful, but 3.4 ml by the time you reach 16. The gap between the metric and Australian columns is 5 ml per tablespoon, which is a third more volume every time and 80 ml over the same 16 spoonfuls.

The last column is where the familiar "16 tablespoons in a cup" comes from, and also where it stops being true. Dividing the US cup of 236.588 ml by 14.787 gives 15.9997, which the tool and every cookbook sensibly print as 16 — the missing 0.0003 is an artifact of 14.787 being itself a rounded figure. Swap to the metric spoon and the same cup needs 15.7725 spoonfuls, and 16 metric tablespoons overshoot it at 240 ml. That 240 ml is not a coincidence: it is the cup as defined for US nutrition labeling in 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii), which rounds the teaspoon to 5 ml, the tablespoon to 15 ml and the fluid ounce to 30 ml in the same breath. The labeling cup and the measuring cup are 3.4 ml apart, and the converter's cups card, which always divides by the 236.588 ml measuring cup, is the reason you see 1.014 instead of 1.

Worked Tablespoon and Milliliter Conversions

3 tablespoons of olive oil — three different answers

A dressing calls for 3 tablespoons of olive oil. On the metric standard the converter returns 45 ml, with 9 teaspoons and 0.19 cups on the cards below. Switch the select to US and the same 3 tablespoons become 44.4 ml; switch it to Australian and they become 60 ml. The spread between the extremes is 15.6 ml, just over a third more oil, which is roughly an extra tablespoon appearing out of nowhere in a recipe that never asked for it. For oil in a vinaigrette that is a matter of taste. For the same 3 tablespoons of cornstarch thickening a sauce, it is the difference between a glaze and a paste — and it is decided entirely by which country wrote the recipe.

Two Australian tablespoons are 40 ml. Set the standard to Australian, type 2, and the converter says so; then swap the direction, type 40, and switch to metric to see what your own spoon has to do: 2.67 tablespoons. Since 20 = 15 + 5, that awkward figure has an exact form — 2 level metric tablespoons plus 2 level metric teaspoons, which is 30 + 10 = 40 ml with nothing rounded. With the US spoon the same 40 ml reads 2.71 tablespoons, and 4 US teaspoons (19.716 ml) stands in for one Australian tablespoon to within 0.284 ml. This scenario is not rare inside Australia either: BakeClub, an Australian baking school, points out that the tablespoon measures sold in local kitchenware shops are frequently the 15 ml size even though Australian recipes are written for 20 ml.

Reverse the direction and type 30. On the metric standard it is exactly 2 tablespoons; on the US standard 2.03; on the Australian standard 1.5. The arithmetic is easy and the practical answer is still to leave the cutlery alone. A study of 50 households in the Galle District of Sri Lanka measured the spoons families actually dose with and found tablespoons holding anywhere from 4.252 ml to 15.043 ml, with 93.3% of them below the 15 ml they were assumed to hold; the teaspoons ranged from 2.893 ml to 7.759 ml. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the FDA discourage kitchen spoons for liquid medicines for exactly this reason. Use the oral syringe or dosing cup that came with the bottle, read the dose in ml, and ask a pharmacist if the label is unclear — this converter is here to tell you what the number means, not what dose to take.

In the milliliters-to-tablespoons direction, 100 ml returns 6.67 metric tablespoons, 6.76 US tablespoons, or exactly 5 Australian ones. The metric figure looks unusable until you pay the remainder in teaspoons: 6 tablespoons is 90 ml, the missing 10 ml is 2 teaspoons, and 6 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons is 100 ml on the nose. This is the general trick for every metric remainder, because 15 divides cleanly into three 5 ml teaspoons — 0.333 of a tablespoon is 1 teaspoon and 0.667 is 2. The Australian column, meanwhile, is why round metric quantities feel easier in Australian recipes: 100 ml is 5 spoonfuls, 60 ml is 3, and 20 ml is 1.

16 tablespoons, and the cup that is not quite a cup

Type 16 with each standard selected in turn. US gives 236.6 ml and a cups card that reads a flat 1 — the origin of the rule that 16 tablespoons make a cup. Metric gives 240 ml and 1.014 cups. Australian gives 320 ml and 1.353 cups, a third of a cup more than anyone intended. Going the other way, filling a real 236.588 ml measuring cup takes 15.77 metric tablespoons or 11.83 Australian ones. The lesson is a practical one: past about 4 tablespoons of a liquid, stop counting spoonfuls and use a graduated cup or jug, because the error in the standard compounds with every spoonful while a single jug reading does not.

The smallest row of the reference table is the one people actually need most, because half-tablespoon measures barely exist. Half a tablespoon is 7.4 ml on the US standard, 7.5 ml on the metric one and 10.0 ml on the Australian one. The teaspoon card is the fix: with a metric or US spoon, 0.5 tbsp is 1.5 teaspoons, which any measuring set can do as one teaspoon plus one half-teaspoon. Tablespoon Mistakes That Change the Recipe

  • Measuring an Australian recipe with a 15 ml spoon. Each tablespoon comes up 5 ml short, which is 25% less than the recipe asked for, and every four spoonfuls loses a full 20 ml tablespoon. Flour and sugar shrug it off; baking powder, yeast, salt and bicarbonate do not, because those work as a proportion of everything else in the bowl. The fix is either switching the select to Australian and reading the ml, or adding one level metric teaspoon to each metric tablespoon — 15 + 5 = 20, exactly.
  • Carrying the 0.213 ml gap between the US and metric spoon into a big batch. At one tablespoon the difference between 14.787 ml and 15 ml is 1.4%, less than the error in how level you filled the spoon. At 10 tablespoons it is 2.13 ml, which is more than a third of a teaspoon, and at 16 it is 3.4 ml. Pick the standard once at the top of the page and let the converter scale it, rather than converting one spoonful and multiplying a rounded answer.
  • Assuming 16 tablespoons is always a cup. It is 16 only with the US spoon, where 236.588 ÷ 14.787 = 15.9997.   • Using the spoon from the cutlery drawer. Serving spoons are designed to look right on a table, not to hold a volume. When researchers measured the spoons used in 50 households in the Galle District of Sri Lanka, the tablespoons held between 4.252 ml and 15.043 ml, and 93.3% of them came in under the 15 ml they were assumed to hold.   • Heaping the spoon. A tablespoon is a level tablespoon; the older recipe vocabulary of rounded and heaped spoonfuls existed precisely because a mound is extra, unmeasured volume. Overfill a 15 ml spoon by even a tenth and you add 1.5 ml a time, which is 6 ml across four spoonfuls — more than the 5 ml per spoon that separates a metric tablespoon from an Australian one.
