Common Length Conversion Mistakes

  • Treating a mile and a nautical mile as the same distance. A statute mile is 1.60934 km, but a nautical mile is 1852 m — about 15% longer. Charts for aviation and shipping use nautical miles because one is very nearly a minute of latitude, so a marine distance read as statute miles comes out badly short.
  • Forgetting that a foot is 12 inches, not 10. Feet and inches are not base-10.
