Hijri to Gregorian converter. Translate any date between the Islamic lunar and Gregorian calendars.

A Hijri to Gregorian converter translates dates between the Islamic lunar calendar (Hijri / هجري) and the Gregorian calendar. Pick a direction, enter the day, month, and year, and the tool returns the equivalent date plus the day of the week, the Anno Hegirae (AH) marker, days until the next major Islamic event (Ramadan, Eid, Hajj), and Arabic-Indic numerals when appropriate.

What Is the Hijri Calendar?

The Hijri calendar (التقويم الهجري) is the lunar calendar used by Muslims worldwide for religious purposes — fasting in Ramadan, Eid celebrations, the Hajj pilgrimage. It begins with the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
The year has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days, totaling 354 or 355 days. This is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year, so each Hijri year begins about 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar than the previous year. Major Islamic events therefore drift through the Gregorian seasons over time.
Months are: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah.

How to Convert Hijri to Gregorian

This tool uses the tabular Islamic calendar (Microsoft / Kuwaiti algorithm), which approximates the observation-based Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia within ±1 to 2 days.
1. Pick the conversion direction (Gregorian → Hijri or Hijri → Gregorian). 2. Enter the day, month, and year in the chosen origin calendar. 3. The tool returns the equivalent date plus the day of the week, ISO-8601 representation, and contextual data such as days remaining until Ramadan or Eid.
For official religious purposes, always cross-check with your local moonsighting authority — calendar dates and observed lunar dates can differ by one day in either direction.

Hijri Conversion Formula

JD=D+29.5(M1)+(Y1)354+(3+11Y)/30+19484401JD = D + \lceil 29.5(M-1) \rceil + (Y-1) \cdot 354 + \lfloor (3+11Y)/30 \rfloor + 1948440 - 1
  • JDJD = Julian Day Number
  • YY = Hijri year
  • MM = Hijri month (1-12)
  • DD = Day of month
The 30-year cycle has 11 leap years at positions 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26, 29. Common years have 354 days, leap years 355. The 12th month (Dhu al-Hijjah) is 30 days in leap years and 29 otherwise. All other odd-numbered months are 30 days, even-numbered months 29.

Tips for Converting Hijri Dates

  • The Hijri calendar drifts about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. Ramadan in 2026 starts in February; in 2027 it will start in early February.
  • For Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Umm al-Qura is the official authority. This converter approximates Umm al-Qura but for legal documents always confirm with the official source.
  • In Indonesia, Muhammadiyah uses arithmetic calculation while NU follows local moonsighting. Dates may differ by one day for the start of Hijri months.
  • Days until next Ramadan and next Eid update automatically based on today's Hijri date.
  • When the input is in Arabic locale, the output also shows Arabic-Indic numerals (٠١٢٣) for the year.

Hijri Calendar FAQ

Why does Ramadan move every year?

The Hijri calendar is purely lunar with no leap-month adjustment, so the year is ~354 days. Ramadan therefore starts about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year and cycles through all seasons over ~33 years.

What is Anno Hegirae?

Anno Hegirae (AH) is the Hijri era marker. The Hijri year 1 AH began on 16 July 622 CE Julian, the date Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina.

How accurate is this Hijri converter?

This converter uses the tabular Islamic calendar (Kuwaiti algorithm). It matches the Umm al-Qura calendar (Saudi Arabia) within ±1-2 days. For exact moonsighting-dependent dates, consult your local Islamic authority.

What about Umm al-Qura, Civil, Astronomical methods?

Saudi Arabia uses Umm al-Qura (a tabular method based on astronomical predictions of new moon visibility). The civil tabular method (Microsoft Kuwaiti) is what this tool uses by default. Astronomical methods compute exact new moon times. They typically differ by 0-2 days for any given date.

Why does my Hijri month name look different from another tool's?

Different tools transliterate Arabic month names differently (Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi I, Rabi' al-Awwal, etc.). The Arabic spelling is the same; only the Latin script transliteration varies.
